Title: Vid Card
Post by: vettie on November 29, 2012, 12:00:05 PM
hmmm

After the first attempt to replace my system's vid card with one of them there fancy kick ass NVidia high powered make everything look real purty video cards, i have yet again saved the cash to make a purchase of one that hopefully is not broken.

Yes. When i bought my new system, it came with an AMD dedicated video card that CAN run MWO. I have been using it for some time now. My intent was to buy the system and a kick ass vid card at the same time, which I did. However the card I choose would not run in my new system, even after upgrading the power supply.

I tried it in my OLD system. It would not boot into windows period. Funny that Linux would boot up fine and even asked me if I wanted to update the drivers for the newly found card...

Anyway, I returned that card. I have stashed away a little here and there and finally I made a purchase. I went with an AMD (my whole system is AMD based anyway so....). I bought a 7770 oc edition.

Now I am just waiting on the little brown truck to show up...

Status on tracking says "out for delivery"

SoonTM...

Hopefully this one will work for you vettie :). I've been running a AMD HD 6850 for over a year and have had no problems with it so far. And it runs MWO pretty darn good too :).

well the little brown truck came and left about 45 mins ago.

I have only 1 word

WOW

This is truly like opening a new game for the first time.

Very high settings - I get 70+fps in the mech lab. 45 to 65 in game (just 2 maps so far, River City and Frozen City night).

the card is shorter than the one I tried before so it fits in the little chassis real nice. I had bought a new power supply so power is not a problem.

Installed the drivers from the disc it came with (Catalyst 12.8 i think) and it is great. I really dont want to upgrade to Catalyst 12.10 cause I am afraid it will screw up what I have now, lol.

I can not believe the difference. Stunning is a good word.

I checked the heat in my machine after running a couple of games, less than 100 F. CPU is at 98F. Nice. No noise from the gpu fan.

I am impressed.

Good to hear. What resolution are you playing at?

I am glad that it all finally worked out for you Vettie.  Now you can join us in the high detail high resolution world and see MWO in all its glory!!!  My ATI MSI 7950 runs MWO like butter.  I always am at 55 to 60 fps at 1680 x 1050 resolution and very high settings.  Now if they can get the game working properly with multi monitor mode, I will be at 5040 x 1050!!!  :D

LOL

well I have a small monitor

A 17" wide screen

The native res on it is 1280 x720 so that is what I have it on.
In game I use the same set to full screen.

I noticed last night while playing, the FPS in the LAB were 62 to 70 FPS but in the game dropped as low as 45 (depending on map).

I did some experimenting with the settings.

I changed from VERY high to high. Mech LAb was exactly the same. Never more than 70 never less than 60.
In game I got almost exactly the same but it never dipped below 48. Visually, I cant tell the difference between Very High and High on any map. I am not sure what the differences are, but whatever they are, I cant see them so i just left it on HIGH settings to get the extra 2 to 3 FPS when the brawls begin on Forest, Forest snow and Frozen City. Caustic Valley and Frozen City Night dont seem to change much regardless of what is happening.

Another thing I noticed is that the 'darkness / glow' that happens when catapults / streak boats get a in a tight brawl, the darkness doesnt last as long and I can actually see well enough to fight back.

One more thing, yes I am excited about the visuals in game from the card, but you (mostly me) has to remember I came from getting 15 to 25 FPS tops. So yeah it is a major improvement.

Next upgrade for my machine will be to go from 6gb RAM to 16gb (max my lil mobo can use and it has to be 4 x 4gb sticks).

Yeah more ram always helps :). I've found that changing the settings doesn't do too much in terms of overall performance yet. I think that has to do with the fact the game is not anywhere close to being fully optimized yet.
